Moxie Musings
Answers to Your Most Pressing Questions

Q. I’m concerned that I’m either [not established enough] or [too seasoned] in my career or business to reap the full benefits of Moxie Camp. What kind of woman is Moxie Camp best for?

A. Moxie Camp is intended for women who are serious about using their values, strengths, resources, and enthusiasm to make big impact in the world. Women in graduate school will be playing alongside emerging business leaders who will be playing alongside serial entrepreneurs. Whether you are working for a social enterprise or nonprofit, are in government or education, champion corporate social responsibility (CSR), run your own business, write political and social commentary, or wear a variety of different hats, if you believe you have room to learn, grow, and exponentially increase your social contribution, we want you at Moxie Camp. While you will be developing the behaviors for socially-conscious leadership, including but not limited to public speaking, mobilizing communities, facilitating teams, negotiating, giving and responding to feedback, strategic planning, and so on, wherever you are in any of these areas is exactly where you need to be to be successful during the weekend.

Q. My time off is super precious. Is it possible for me just to come for part of Moxie Camp?

A. Each beautiful layer of the Moxie Camp experience has been developed with you, the Moxie Camper, in mind. From the moment you arrive each of the 2.5 days to the moment you leave, each workshop, coaching experience, activity, panel, ritual, Campfire Session, and so on has been carefully conceived to rock your world, keep you engaged, and most importantly, to build upon the last in order to meet you where you are and take you where you want to be. If you want to leave a legacy you are proud of, lady, give yourself the opportunity to be a sponge and soak up every moment of Moxie Camp. When you show up to Moxie Camp (and all of your life!) at 100%, you make it possible to perform at 100%.

Q. While I’m totally stoked at the idea of Moxie Camp, sometimes life “happens.” What if I purchase my ticket, and then I’m not able to make it.

A. Moxie Camp tickets are not refundable. Trust your decision that you want to be here, and do what you need to do to make it happen! If an emergency comes up and you really cannot make it, we’ll allow you to transfer your ticket into the name of a coworker, friend, or family member or hold onto it for 2013.

Q. I’m not sure I can make the financial investment in Moxie Camp. Help!

A. Although Moxie Camp is a one-of-kind experience for female changemakers, as you probably realize, a complementary skill-building experience could run a participant two to three times the cost of our weekend. Part of stepping into your moxie is knowing when and where to invest your money and, just as importantly, that everything you seek you can score – the cost of participation in Moxie Camp included. Sometimes you just have to put in a little faith and elbow grease to make it happen. Here are 5 strategies we recommend if your purse strings are a little tight:

  1. Ask your employer. Many companies have funds designated for employee professional development. Start by investigating whether your company is one of them. If not, perhaps it’s time to re-negotiate salary or ask for a promotion (and then you can pay for Moxie Camp yourself!).
  2. Throw a Moxie workshop or host a Moxie event. Whether you’re a master at public speaking or a whiz at web design, ignite your moxie by sharing your unique gifts with your community. Ask a local restaurant to donate (or significantly discount) the space and food. Charge approximately $50/head. And collect payment in advance through a site like Eventbrite. Get 6 people there, and you’ve paid for Moxie Camp. Get 20 people there, and you also have your travel and lodging costs covered.
  3. Take on what Camp Coach Jenny Blake refers to as a “side hustle.” Whether you love animals and want to do some daily dog walking or get old school and take on some babysitting clients, if you are making even just $15/hour, that’s 20 hours of supplemental work to come up with the ticket price for a first wave Moxie Camp ticket.
  4. Use Chipin.com to raise funds. In lieu of a birthday gift or as an investment in the big, beautiful moves you will be busting after Camp, invite family and friends to donate towards the cost of your Moxie Camp ticket. Chipin.com is an easy way to solicit money online. Shoot out an email or start a Facebook group promoting your Chipin campaign, and start tracking the money that will arrive directly in your PayPal account.

Q. I want to make sure I’m totally ready for Moxie Camp. What do I need to do in advance? What do I wear? What do I bring with me?

A. As soon as you register for Moxie Camp, you will receive a Welcome Letter detailing what’s in store for you. It will list the dates for our 3 Moxie Camp coaching calls (one before the event and two after). Each call will be taped should you have to miss one. Future emails from Team Moxie Camp will detail what you will want to bring with you each day to Camp and outline the SuccessWork™ to bring with you to our first call.

While we will have some additional SuccessWork™ lined up for you between the first call and Camp to get you further flexing those leadership muscles, we understand that you are busy and promise that your activities won’t take more than a few hours of your time.

On Friday night show up to Moxie Camp dressed in comfy, loose-fitting clothing that’s yoga appropriate and have either a yoga mat or towel on hand. Saturday and Sunday are changemaker chic (practical, professional, and full of pizzazz). Please be respectful of fellow Camper’s allergies and lay low on the perfume and fragrant lotion. And since you’ll be playing barefoot the whole weekend, make sure you treat yourself to a summer pedi!

Q. How can I be sure I’m a fit for Moxie Camp?

A. While nobody can predict exactly how an individual will respond to an experience, here are 10 signs that you are the kind of woman who will thrive at Moxie Camp.

  1. You know that you have been called to build a better world and get totally jazzed hanging out with other do gooders like you.
  2. You believe that leaders are made and not born. Wherever you are in your leadership development, you understand that it is a stepping stone to greater impact.
  3. You recognize that you are 100% responsible for your own life experience – the good, the bad, and the confusing. You prioritize results over excuses.
  4. You are a risk taker. You accept that fear is totally normal, especially when stepping out into the unknown. You’d rather risk a little failure than live a life of safety and complacency.
  5. You resist the tendency to create an either/or between meaningful work and financial abundance. While you may still be on a journey to integrate the two, you believe that you can make big money AND big impact.
  6. You find yourself constantly asking how you can be of value to others. Whether it’s giving your time or money, spearheading a project to respond to a problem, or looking at how you can connect people in your tribe, you make being of service a priority.
  7. You are open to new ideas and new ways of working. While you may have your own preferences, styles, and habits, you are willing to try most things (as long as they’re safe and legal!) at least once.
  8. You are coachable. To live, work, create, and play at your very best, you are open to people stretching you outside of your comfort zone so that you can continue to develop.
  9. You are invested in integrating your work with the rest of your life. You recognize that leisure, spirituality, exercise, diet, and meaningful relationships are all components of a sustainable and fully satisfying changemaking life.
  10. You don’t take yourself too seriously. You have a good sense of humor and love excuses to have silly, stupid fun.
